Sometimes our teacher would make a big pot of stew or soup on the stove and we would all have that for lunch.

In school we learned "the 3 Rs" - Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. We had to supply our own slates, paper, ink and quill pens.  Books were scarce and we often had to share a speller or reader.
